Volvo Cars, best known for handsome Swedish design and impressive safety features, was recently recognized for its sustainability in Sweden's Sustainable Brands 2011 survey.

Volvo, which placed 3rd overall in a list of 151 companies, was the top rated carmaker of the survey, which included 18 automotive brands, but it should be noted that all 3,000 surveyed were Swedish citizens; no doubt the reason why Saab came in 2nd among carmakers and 7th overall.

"It's great that Volvo is perceived as one of Sweden's most sustainable brands," said Linn Fortgens, the Director of Sustainability Issues at Volvo Car Corporation. "We've worked systematically on our social and environmental responsibility, and it's clear that our hard work has given results."

With surveys based on consumer opinion, Sustainable Brands focuses on producing an annual, independent survey of company sustainability, both automotive and non-automotive.

Examples of sustainability initiatives from Volvo include the DRIVe series of cars, launched in 2008. The DRIVe range is comprised of fuel-efficient diesel vehicles, which Volvo has sold nearly 100,000 units of. Volvo also focuses on reducing harmful environmental impact.

"We also work on these issues internally, for instance by improving the efficiency of our energy usage and refuse handling," added Fortgens. "We launched a new environmental strategy last year that includes a zero vision for environmental accidents, climate-smart logistics solutions and focus on the company's water usage."

Ambition and focus are the driving forces of Volvo's sustainability. In fact, the company is striving to ensure that by year 2020 no driver will be killed or seriously injured in one of their new vehicles. Such goals will be sure to help Volvo remain as sustainable financially as they are environmentally.
