Volvo Car Corporation chose the 2011 Auto Shanghai to unveil a new concept car the Swedish company calls the Concept Universe. According to President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation, Stefan Jacoby, "The Concept Universe offers the world a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next top-of-the-line sedan."

The Concept Universe is a big, broad, elegantly styled sedan. What's surprising is the fact that the concept's exterior styling and proportions bear deep resemblance to competitor luxury vehicles. A short study of the Concept Universe from various angles reveals styling more akin to cars currently on sale from Bentley, Jaguar, and even the Ford Interceptor concept of 2007.

In keeping with the luxury design theme, the Concept Universe's rear doors are hinged at the rear, as opposed to being hinged at the front as is found on most vehicles on sale today. That provides easier access to the rear quarters and is a prominent feature of Rolls-Royce's Phantom luxury car.

Interior styling is modern though minimalist in its approach. There's a lot of dark wood grain on the dash, and a large monitor on the centre console, but aside from that, the interior is certainly not as opulent looking as a Jaguar, or Audi, or Mercedes-Benz. In contrast, the interior of the Concept Universe looks airy, futuristic, and very unique.

There are many concepts at the 2011 Auto Shanghai that simply aren't meant for production, and while that's true of the Concept Universe, it doesn't tell the whole story. Apart from the unconventional interior, this concept looks production-ready and appears to hit its targeted demographic spot on.
As Mr. Jacoby concludes, "Our aim is to be the brand that best understands what buyers of modern luxury cars want. We are eager to hear what the most demanding Chinese customers think of this luxurious concept. Later, we will show the design in Europe and the United States in order to bring it into the global context that we are aiming for with all our car models."
