Premium vehicle manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Lexus get a lot of public and media attention. Yet, one luxury automaker often goes unnoticed. Whether it's because Volvo doesn't have nearly as many new models and developments as its luxury peers or some other reason, the Swedish automaker just isn't as popular.

The Volvo Concept You may provide a catalyst for change. It's a concept vehicle that recently debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and is part of Volvo's next step in "… the evolution of the company's upcoming large luxury sedan."

"The Concept You explores new territories in our search for the ultimate intuitive car that makes the owner's manual a thing of the past. Smart phones and smart pads have brought mobile infotainment into a new era. Here, we use a number of touch-screens to replace buttons and controls in order to make the driver totally connected, totally in control. The technology also helps us to create a refreshingly uncluttered interior," explained Peter Horbury, Vice President of Design, Volvo Car Corporation.

The Concept You features a main control centre made up of 4 components. They include a digital Driver Information Monitor (DIM), a head-up display on the windscreen, a touch-screen on the centre console and another touch-screen between the 2 rear seats. Additionally, the Concept You features an "air-powered" sound system from Alpine. The sound system's "FreshAir" subwoofer apparently uses air from outside the vehicle to create "the ultimate listening experience."

Contrasting all of this new-age technology is a bit of old world luxury charm. The Concept You is outfitted with a wooden floor that's been covered with hand-tufted wool carpets from Swedish rug manufacturer Kasthall.

"The interior is full of classic forms, materials and textures, used with a twist to create a special contemporary luxury experience. It is exceptionally refined, yet with all the simplistic assets that make Volvo champions of the uncomplicated." states Horbury.

Additionally, what luxury car would be complete without a set of big, shiny rims? The Concept You fits this trend with a set of 21-inch polished aluminum wheels that are wrapped in Pirelli tires.

So, while Volvo may not be at the forefront of luxury motoring right now, in a few years' time the ambitious automaker may be considered one of the world's premiere luxury brands. Peter Horbury seems to think so, "We are carving out a unique position among the luxury car makers with our special kind of Scandinavian Design. It will be unmatched in performance, technology and craftsmanship, but without superficiality or complication."
