[Professional Blog] Harvest

Published on November 30, -1

At 8 p.m., Bob opens the drawer and pulls out Old Man. The thought of learning the song about an old guy who worked at Neil Youngs early '70s ranch puts me over the harvest moon. Guitar teacher Bob has a heart of gold. He researches songs in his spare time so I can keep rockin in the free world. The past number of months has been a Neil Young harvest. Its all I want to learn and Bobs encouraging attitude is Hey hey, my my. We start Old Man and making the chords is a reminder not only love can break your heart. Im helpless. Playing over an amp, my attempt at the almost algebraic chord progression from Dsus2 to D to Dsus4 sounds like a hurricane. I try it again and again but always keep...ah...fooling up. The ever-so-patient Bob remains enthusiastic, despite likely wanting to poke his eye out with a powderfinger. At half-past eight, the session ends and I leave an unknown legend, thrilled to be learning Young's awesome stuff long after the goldrush. The next lesson cant come fast enough a testament to the mentors love of teaching everything from Hank to Hendrix. Bob, this notes for you. Long may you run.
