[Professional Blog] Run to the hills

Published on November 30, -1

An early discovery in my training for this years Tely 10: Im slower at running than the Canada Revenue Agency is at processing tax returns. (Only joking, CRA. No audit, please.)

Anyway, to train regularly and gain speed, I need music fast, pounding, sew-an-Iron Maiden-patch-on-your-running shirt songs.

During a jog, the high tempo stuff is good for keeping pace and prevents me from having to listen to myself.

Steve, my mind says during a run with no music, you really shouldnt be wasting so much on beer, movie rentals and takeout. Start putting some of that away...And why do you put so much gravy over your Sunday dinner?

See what I mean? By turning on the tunes and listening to Crazy Train, you run the conscience right out of your head.

Problem is, Ive had the same songs on my MP3 player for a long time, and this spring, they seem a little boring. I need a tune-up.

Dont get me wrong. Each of the current tracks are favourites I enjoy immensely and often, without realizing it, catch myself singing out loud while running.

(Yes, that round, bald guy belting out Black Sabbath and yelling I am iron man near Road De Luxe during last years Tely 10 in 1,800,000th place was me.)

But it really is time for some new music.

And this is where help from this blogs reader would be welcomed.

Id like you to suggest songs and help create the ultimate list of running tunes.

If you run, post your playlist.

If you dont, send songs that make you move.

Oh, and no ballads please. Such songs do nothing for a run and have only really benefited me once at a high school dance in 1986 when I slow danced with a young woman to Take My Breath Away from the Top Gun soundtrack.

In case you were wondering, heres my current playlist: * Unchained, Van Halen, * Vertigo, U2, * Whiplash, Metallica, * Run to the Hills, Iron Maiden, * Rockin In The Free World, Neil Young, * Knockin at Your Back Door, Deep Purple, * Bring The Noise, Anthrax, * Panama, Van Halen, * Super Freak, Rick James (I dont know where this one came from), * Iron Man, Black Sabbath, * Yankee Rose, David Lee Roth, * Beautiful Day, U2, * Bark at the Moon, Ozzy Osbourne, * Detroit Rock City, KISS, * Jump Around, House of Pain, * You Shook Me All Night Long, AC/DC, * Mean Street, Van Halen, * Enter Sandman, Metallica, * Crazy Train, Ozzy Osbourne, * Looks That Kill, Motley Crew, * The Trooper, Iron Maiden, * TNT, AC/DC, * Like Ya Would, Joey Smallwood.

OK, Im only joking about the last one, but Im not kidding about wanting suggestions for the ultimate list of running songs.

    Steve,
Give Dexy's Midnight Runners' Come on Eileen (1982) a try. It might be a bit before your time, but if you can keep up with the tempo at the end, you're ready for the Boston Marathon. If I see some guy spazzing out at a fair trot down the street, I'll know you've got it conquered.
Good luck with the Tely 10!
