[Professional Blog] Boy OK after two-month needle, dad recovering slowly

Published on November 30, -1

The public health nurse is ready to vaccinate and inches toward our 10-week-old. Stand over your wifes shoulder, she tells me, and shake that rattle loudly to distract him. Appropriate, because Im rattled and need distracting. That two-month needle in the nurses fingers is all-caps BIG. The thought of it being jabbed in the little man is too much. Long enough to go through his leg, it seems, that sucker is going to hurt him. Hes going to scream and cry. I shake the rattle and roll...my eyes and stomach. My wife feeds him to keep his focus on something else. The needle slowly moves closer and closer and closer towards him. Cue the Jaws soundtrack...Da nant, da nant, da nant.... Its a centimetre away. Im nauseous. The nurse gently jabs it in his upper leg. Hes going to put the place up. I brace myself, anticipating a scream. But, surprisingly, theres a small whimper and he just continues feeding. Ahhh...relief. The kids obviously got his dads grit and nerves of steel.
