Just before Christmas, hockey in this province got a shot in the arm with the release of Newfoundland Hockey Scene, a new publication solely dedicated at promoting all levels of hockey in this province, from minor to major junior and the Newfoundlanders plugging away in the NHL. Publisher Sam Feltham toured his magazine around the senior team rinks throughout the province and says the response was nothing but positive on all fronts. Feltham promised a second edition for March and true to his word, hes delivered. Volume 1, No. 2 is back from the printers around Mar. 25. Somebody told me from the beginning that youve got to love this or your wont do it, Feltham says of his magazine endeavour. And I found that I love it. Theres so many public interest stories out there that somebodys got to do them. Inside this time, Feltham and his team of reporters and photographers have broadened their scope to include a hefty section on minor hockey. All 44 centres, stories, photographs, the whole nine yards, he says. Included in the minor hockey coverage is a pair of feature stories on two lads Jerry Donnelly from Brents Cove, White Bay and Michael White of Newtown, Bonavista Bay players, like so many in rural areas of the province, who arent noticed as much as those from major centres. They want to play hockey and theyre probably not going to get the chance to play in bigger circles because its a lot harder for them to get noticed. Youve got to be able to push yourself in front of the right faces and its not always possible for them to do that. Leading into the minor hockey features is a piece on Bonavista product and Calgary Flames defenceman Adam Pardy. And for the major midget, junior and senior fans, Feltham has made sure to have all the impact stories. And come Herder time, you might be able to purchase a fresh copy at Mile One.Check back for more details. In the meantime if you want to order a copy of the first edition, you can order one here with $1.50 of the proceeds going towards the senior team of your choice.
