[Professional Blog] Don't Walk Alone

Another suspicious approach on young student

Published on November 30, -1

Today, I received a letter from my children's school.

However, it wasn't about fundraising or in-service days. It was a warning that, yesterday morning, a young girl was accosted by two suspicious characters in a pick-up truck.

I haven't seen a release on this yet from the Constabulary, and I have no idea if it will make tonight's news. So I am reproducing the note here, because I think parents all over Conception Bay South - indeed, the northeast Avalon - need to be vigilant about this.

Fortunately, the truck sounds like it was easily identifiable, so I suspect they will arrest these individuals in short order.

Here's the note:

Please be advised that on the morning of Tuesday, September 30, 2008, a female student attending Holy Spirit High, and walking to school at approximately 9:10 a.m., was approached on two separate occasions by two men in their late 50's on the first occasion they remained in the truck, but on the second occasion the passenger got out of the vehicle and approached the student. This happened on the main highway.

The student was questioned as to where she was walking and asked if she needed a ride. She was later approached again and one of the two people offered to carry her with her textbooks to school.

It is an older, small 4X4 truck, similar to a Ford Ranger or Toyota. It is green, but the cab is a lighter green. There is a window that slides open at the rear of the cab, and 4X4' is written on the rear panels in red lettering. It had a dirty appearance and it and the two male occupants looked as if they were doing some messy construction work, or a similar activity.

Anyone seeing this vehicle is asked to contact the RNC immediately with details about the time and location, and the number/description of occupants. The license plate number is unknown.

Students should avoid walking alone until this matter is resolved.

The recent white van duo were also estimated to be of similar age. Those incidents occurred around St. Philip's-Portugal Cove, but police eventually abandoned the investigation. Could be related.
