[Professional Blog] Independent
Rises Again

Defunct newspaper will
publish online edition

The Independent is making a comeback.

The newspaper, which folded in July 2008, is being revived by business person Brian Dobbin, who owns rights to the name. However, it will be coming back as an online product only no more newsprint edition a move that will save substantial dollars in printing and distribution.

I heard rumours about the papers return several days ago, and have been trying to get at the truth ever since. I sent messages to Dobbin, who was out of the province. He replied while still in transit, confirming my information but pointing out the launch is still some distance out.

I am developing a website with the intention of launching the Independent again but am not so close, Dobbin wrote in an email. We have been at it for three months now and are trying to build a robust and stylish site that will do justice to the print version as well as populate the enterprise with a new internet-schooled journalist team.

In other words, none of the former reporters will be returning to the fold, unless in a freelance capacity.

Dobbin said it is still too soon to talk in any depth about the project, and offered to do a more detailed interview in the near future, when there is a little more meat on the bones.

I will definitely take him up on that offer, and wish him well on the new venture.

Bold predictions - the 'Independent' will 'launch' on the eve of a federal election. Its 'circulation' will be limited to the St. John's area. Its 'content' will be very one-sided. And it will 're-vanish' as quickly as it 're-appeared' shortly afterward.
    Just a hunch.
