CBC NL nominated for 11 journalism awards

Twenty-four reporters and media outlets in Newfoundland and Labrador are finalists for Atlantic Journalism Awards. The winners will be announced in a May 8 ceremony in Halifax.

CBC in Newfoundland and Labrador received the greatest recognition by far, with a total of 14 nominations in nine categories. And CBC NL has already won the award in the Online News Reporting category. (This is in contrast with NTV, who did not receive any.)

Nominated journalists from CBC include Peter Cowan, Rod Etheridge, Deanne Fleet, Natalie Kalata, Chris O'Neill-Yates and Lee Pitts.

The event will be hosted by Chris O'Neill-Yates of CBC.

The Telegram and VOCM were nominated for two awards each. As well, there were four nominations for writers with Atlantic Business Magazine, which is based in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Ron Ennis, the former managing editor of Transcontinental community newspapers in this province.

According to the AJA press release, Ron Enniss career spans 42 years of dedication to community journalism in Atlantic Canada. He moved from proof-reader to reporter to editor and managing editor of a portfolio of 17 community newspapers in Newfoundland with weekly circulation exceeding 100,000.

Ennis was managing editor of the other R-B papers while I served as Managing Editor with The Sunday Express, so I came to know him well. This award is richly deserved.
