Geoff Meeker (Meeker on Media) Blog

[Professional Blog] Interesting days ahead

In my previous post, I offered extensive information about Craig Westcott’s decision to join the Liberal Opposition, in the role of Communications Director.

I neglected to ask one critically important question.  It’s not often that a political PR person is also the owner of two publications – The Business Post and Irish Loop Post – so there could be temptation to exert some editorial influence, for political ends.

I sent Westcott a note late last night, asking the question: Will the new editor, Kerri Breen, have editorial independence? I asked this same question of Breen herself, who was first to reply.

“Craig and I haven't had much of a chance to talk yet, so this hasn't come up,” Breen said, in an email. “It's very, very early days, you must appreciate. I can't speak for Craig, but I assume he hired me because he was confident in my ability to uphold the high journalistic standards readers of the Business Post and the Irish Loop Post have come to expect.”

I received a reply from Westcott this morning.

“Kerri Breen has full editorial independence,” he said. “The papers won’t be used as propaganda organs.”

Right answer, for sure. Interesting days ahead, for The Business Post, the Liberal Opposition and the Williams Government.

To Dave King: I am not a Liberal partisan. Nor am I a member of any political party. I tend to vote based on a combination of factors, including whether I like the candidate, the party’s platform, and the party leader. I don’t think Yvonne Jones has a chance to win the next election. She’s just a benchwarmer, in my view. When Williams was elected in 2003, I was a big fan, and I wrote glowingly of him as late as 2006. However, I did watch him with a critical eye, and Williams slowly lost my support, with every blunder he made. I have been commenting on many of those gaffes in my blog, carefully supporting them with facts and links. Would you care to challenge me on any specific statement I’ve made? Why not discuss the facts, rather than attack me as “partisan”? Or, like the premier, do you prefer to attack the messenger, rather than debate the message? Like the premier, do you attack as a diversion, because the facts make you uncomfortable?

I agree with Dave King. The funny thing is, I am truly a non-partisan citizen but if I disagree with Geoff or make an objective comment of his blog, I get attacked by Geoff and/or his buddies accusing me of being a Liberal which I am not. His/their arguments are so hypocritical it is not funny. I am not sure if Geoff thinks he is "fighting the good fight" but many "objective" people think the majority of his "media' columns are laughbale, including media folk.

Dave King, you need to get a grip. And I suppose you are no partisan yourself? Ardently exposing and commenting on King Danny's behavior time and again is not necessarily "partisan", however in this most polarized place - creation of the King himself to gain power and stifle dissent - any public comment on it will get you called "partisan", or "traitor". Unreal.

Kerri is first rate and Craig could not have found a better person to take over his papers in his absence.

Well, well...we have finally heard from Ed Hollett concerning this big news story. Quite inetersting that the self proclaimed Liberal blogger has not even weighed in on this story. The blog waves are a buzz and we have Mr. Hollett hiding and waiting for the story to run its course. Wonder why that is??

How The Telegram allows this one-sided, Liberal partisan glorification continue in the absence of any sort of counter weight is remarkable. Moreover, this is entirely irresponsible on the part of The Telegram. It is no secret that the author of this blog is a Liberal partisan. That The Telegram allows this to go on week after week under the cover of a blog about the media is beyond reason. Geoff denies it here then has his little snicker, snicker with The Hobbit over on his Facebook page. We are not ALL stupid byes! I have no problem with partisanship. Just come out in the open that is all. My home subscription is canceled as of now.
