Reputation gained through blogging, social media

Outspoken local blogger Shannon Reardon has been hired as a Communications Specialist with the Liberal Opposition office.

Reardon starts work on Monday with the party, which, like its federal counterpart, has a lot of rebuilding to do. She will report to Peter Miles, the Director of Communications with the Liberal Opposition.

Reardon has had a long connection to the party.

“My work with government (while an undergrad) goes way back now to the Tobin-Tulk-Grimes era when I was a parliamentary page for two years, from 1999-2001, and I worked as a summer student for two summers on the Hill with Joan Marie Aylward back then, first in Municipal Affairs and then in Finance.”

Reardon has risen to prominence in recent months through her blog, The Fighting Newfoundlander, in which she keeps a cynical eye on the activities of the Dunderdale Government. She has also been highly critical, on her Facebook profile, of former premier Danny Williams.

Reardon has no direct experience in public relations, but has studied political science at Memorial University and has long been a Liberal supporter.

“I think that having always been a Liberal, even when it was massively unpopular to be so in the Williams years, and my blogging - in particular - and social media participation certainly helped. My background is History (some Honours and Graduate level work completed before I began a B.Ed) and Political Science, and then a short stint teaching high school in Grand Bank and here.”

Reardon says that blogging and social media can be influential in cultivating career opportunities.

“(Through) social media political participation, and it doesn't necessarily have to be political – it could go for any area of interest – one can possibly find opportunities opening up for them and coming their way. So, it is indeed advantageous to be involved, especially in this connected world we live in.”

Actually, it's a fair point about communications staff hiring with the Conservatives and the NDP. A post about communications staff in place for the government and the political parties would be of interest. Along with some background. The Hill Times regularly keeps track of comms staff comings and going. Such an update here would be welcome.

While the Liberal party did advertise publicly for its Director of Communications, Researcher and Chief of Staff (and then appointed at least 2 of those 3 without interviews at all), I can find no advert for a Communications Specialist. The NDP did publicly advertise for a Director of Communications and interviews have been held. The PC government no longer advertises for Directors of Communications, choosing to promote from within their army of communications and political staffers.

Geoff, Time to ask Shannon why she deleted her blog, please.

Dwight Ball: you are judged by the company you keep, and this kind of company does not build one once of confidence in you or your party.

Who cares? Why would the Telegram waste this space talking about this?

This is a great laugh for sure. The one thing the Liberals need now is a little positive attitude, got no worries about that from Reardon. Reading some of her blogs will show you that she is the most negative person around. Way to go Dwight...another loser in the opposition office. Keep up what your doing...will assure the PC's are in power for awhile yet and will certainly give the NDP official opposition status.

Interesting. I'm sure the PCs or the Dippers have hired new communications staff. Why didn't you write about that? Why is this space always an attack on the PCs or a Liberal puff piece? Does the Liberal Party pay for this space?

Actually, you can't read her blog as she's made it private.

I'm what you would call a ghost reader. I'm retired, I read the online papers, blogs, tweets, etc. I don't have any political alliance. I vote for the party that best fits my ideas during election time. I always liked to read Shannon's Blog, but this news tells me that she is not unlike any other party hack. Shannon wrote/spoke out against political patronage appointments on many occasions and now, how is this any different? Because she's been spewing out Liberal jibberish for the last 10 years shes gets a job in the Liberal Office? Paid for by my tax dollars? She doesn't have a communications/PR background suited for the role, nor did Elizabeth Matthews (who Shannon burned daily until she refused the CNOLPB patronage appointment). Get my point? This is no different Shannon. I'm dissappointed with you. - Signed, a former "The Fighting Newfoundlander" blog reader.

this is amazing. Just when you thought the Liberal Party couldn't sink any lower, they rise to the occasion. Great to see Sue Kelland Dyer's parrot is now the mouthpiece of the provincial Libs.

Congratulations to Reardon. Her passion for this province is obvious and it is good to see the Liberal Party hire young, bright up-and-comers.

Brutal.... just brutal. This is a strong signal that things within the Liberal Party are very unlikely to change. Did anybody else apply for the job? Was she the only one? The only thing that comes out of her mouth is negativity. I'm not sure she is even capable of a positive thought to be quite honest. The one thing that I have learned from her blog is that I will never learn anything from her blog. It's the same old same old same old over and over with her. She is not balanced enough to give credit where credit is do and some of her posts border on rage. This is OLD STYLE politics and many younger voters today do not appreciate or want to participate in this style of politics. Hopefully there are enough people left over from the Tobin-Tulk-Grimes era that will vote Liberal. Dwight, time for you step in and correct this problem. The only person more brutal and predictable in their negativity and scorn is Ed.

Their current Director of Communications has no communications education or experience either, a former campaign aid. Sometimes you need professional staff with professional backgrounds as creating white noise does not get your message out in the right way. This is tempered by the the fact that first you need a well crafted message to begin with. The Liberal Opposition office is a repository for the old faithful, not a professional political operation which is a disservice to the Province.
