Briefing Note

[Professional Blog] Transparency (ii)

Published on March 11, 2013

On Friday afternoon, the good folks over at Cabinet Secretariat sent me another batch of orders in council. This batch contains all of the formal cabinet directives up until Feb. 28th.

In case you forgot, OCs are the formal decisions of cabinet. Here’s the first story I did on the issue.

Every other province in Canada has either an online registry of orders in council, or a webpage telling citizens that OCs are publicly available documents, and informing them how they can access them. Newfoundland and Labrador has neither.

In a story for the weekend paper, Democracy Watch called the Newfoundland and Labrador government stance on orders in council “dangerously undemocratic.”

Anyway, a few weeks ago I took matters into my own hands. The government doesn’t have an online database of OCs, so I set one up myself.

Here’s a link to the first batch: http://imgur.com/a/KdOFM#0

I’m still trying to work out some of the technology kinks. Instead of using imgur for this batch, I’m going to try Google Drive instead. Here’s a link to the PDF.

As always, if you’ve got any helpful suggestions, comments or questions, feel free to e-mail me at jmcleod@thetelegram.com

Enjoy!
