Ward 2 Candidate Jonathan Galgay is calling on the City of St. John’s to take immediate action to ensure a Revitalization Plan is put in place for Victoria Park prior to September’s Municipal Election.
“Victoria Park has been a vibrant park in the city's west end since 1890. It’s time for the city to invest in its revitalization with the interest of promoting its historical characteristics and recreational activities for both young and old alike”.
This 6.5 acre park is the last of the three major parks in our city which has yet to receive any substantial long term commitment from the City of St. John’s.
This park has seen little to no major infrastructure since the closure of the pool in 1998. The pool house is in desperate need of repair and is an “eye sore” to the historical landscape.
The Revitalization Plan should include:
• New Community Centre (old pool house)
• Opening of “Bennett’s Creek” through the park, which was enclosed in two stages – 1940’s & 1960’s
• Enhanced lighting
• Scoreboard for Baseball Field
• Recreational facility such as a Splash Pad for children.
