Happily married for 27 years with two children.

Work history

37 year employee of Memorial University of NL Libraries, began as a clerk, advanced to several supervisory positions and retired in 2007 as Manager of Facilities Services, QE II Library.

Work related activities

Served on numerous MUN committees including Job Evaluation Steering Committee, Pensions Committee and Benefits Committee; served fourteen years as voluntary President of the 850 staff member Local 1615, Canadian Union of Public Employees; served on numerous union committees including Labor Management, Negotiations and Education.

Provincial labor involvement

Served as Executive Officer for CUPE NL; served a term as Executive Officer on NL Federation of Labor.

Provincial political activity

Ran as the NDP candidate in Cape St. Francis District in 2003; served three years as NDP provincial treasurer.

Municipal political activity

Elected in 2005 to Torbay Town Council and re-elected in 2009. Served on most committees of Council, represented the Town on the Jack Byrne Arena Board and served as Council representative to the NL Stewardship Association of Municipalities where I was elected Treasurer of that body for three years.

Education related activities

Served three years on the Holy Trinity Elementary School Council, including one year as Chair; served three years on the Holy Trinity High School Council, including two years as Chair.

Recreation involvement

Player, coach, executive member, including President of Avalon East Hockey League (recognized as Honorary Member) and the Torbay Men’s Softball League (coached at provincial level). Coach, executive member including President of: Torbay Women’s Softball League (coached at provincial level); St. John’s Senior Women’s Softball League (coached at provincial and national levels). Also player, executive member including President of Torbay Mixed Bowling League (recognized as Honorary Member); co-founder of the Avalon East Recreational Hockey League; certified NL hockey referee andsoftball umpire; served as Transportation Director on several Host Committees when St. John’s hosted National and World Softball Championships. With this extensive involvement in community recreation activity, I was inducted into the Torbay Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Current social interests

I am founder of the Torbay Folk Club which is involved in providing entertainment through a mix of singers, musicians and storytellers. We also provide music for seniors’ homes and anyone who wants a little fun in their lives. Paddy’s Day Concerts, dinner theatres, mummering, and a winter monthly jam at Liddy’s are other features.

Since retirement I have given over one hundred and fifty units of plasma to the Canadian Blood Services, which brings my total donation number to over two hundred. I do this weekly if at all possible and intend to continue donating as long as I can.
