The story so far
The past few weeks have been absolutely crazy in organizing Katrin’s Karepackage’s big 1,000-km bike ride across Newfoundland - let me try and fill you in!
Since arriving home from Halifax in June I have been focusing all of my time and efforts in approaching various companies in Corner Brook, while training everyday. The thought of trying to fundraise $30,000 dollars in one summer, while having to train to bike 1,000 km was daunting at the beginning, however the anxiety quickly decreased for four reasons.
1. Corner Brook companies were beyond generous, donating thousands of dollars. Within the first two weeks alone I was above $10,000! Locke’s Electrical, for example, donated $5,000.00.
2. The Slick Chicks biking group, as well as, Cycle Solutions taught me about all there is to know about bikes! While Cycle Solutions helped me pick out all of my biking gear, The Slick Chicks helped me put the biking gear to use taking me on various bike rides!
3. An angel arrived… Tarragh Shanahan, the community resource coordinator at the Canadian Cancer Society! She took any of my worries away as she used her enthusiasm and expertise to guide me along the way.
4. The support and encouragement that I received from everyone gave me the motivation to bring Katrin’s Karepackage to its full potential!
Quickly everything fell into place and before I knew it, it was time for me to get ready to leave for the big trip!
After spending the last few days getting my biking gear printed with logos, getting my car decorated, and packing up my gear, my father and I finally left to drive to St. Anthony!
During the drive I felt mixed emotions – While I felt in awe as I looked at the beautiful coastal communities, I also felt a sense of sadness as I realized just how remote some of these communities are. It was then that I realize just how important the funding for this project was, as the communities lacked the much needed medical services and transportation to get these services.
I now feel even more determined than ever to make Katrin’s Karepackage a success, as I realize just how much the residents need and deserve these funds.
I am now getting ready to go to bed for my early 5 a.m. rise to begin the great bike trip! I would like to thank Haven Inn for sponsoring me a one-night stay.
Talk to you all soon!
