Changing Canadian demographics pose challenge for educators, Dyer says

Through immigration, Canada is becoming "a scale model of the human race," according to renowned Newfoundland journalist and author Gwynne Dyer.
Dyer, speaking Wednesday evening at the Canadian Association of Principals conference at the Delta Hotel, said federal immigration reforms since the 1960s have changed demographics in a way that is largely responsible for quelling the conflict between French and English Canada.
"It has essentially, I would argue, saved this country as a political entity," Dyer said.
These policies have resulted in classrooms in large urban centres with children with diverse culturally backgrounds, creating challenges for Canadian educators.
"It's been a journey that's occurred with remarkably little conflict," Dyer said. "This is an extraordinary accomplishment, which you might want to bare in mind next time you deal with the downside."
The conference will continue until Friday.
