Humber Direct-Air wants flight between U.K. and Deer Lake continued

A group of local entrepreneurs says it has been working and continues to work towards ensuring the continuance of a direct charter flight between the United Kingdom and Deer Lake Regional Airport.

Humber Valley Resort recently announced changes to its operations that would, among other things, involve discontinuing to subsidize a money-losing direct charter flight between Deer Lake and Gatwick.

Corner Brook - A group of local entrepreneurs says it has been working and continues to work towards ensuring the continuance of a direct charter flight between the United Kingdom and Deer Lake Regional Airport.

Humber Valley Resort recently announced changes to its operations that would, among other things, involve discontinuing to subsidize a money-losing direct charter flight between Deer Lake and Gatwick.

However, a group calling itself Humber Direct-Air says the resort and those charter flights has meant millions of spinoff dollars being injected into the local economy.

The loss of being able to connect western Newfoundland to one of the largest economies in the world via a relatively short, four- to five-hour flight, would significantly harm the local economy's growth, according to the group.

"As a result of this, a number of business stakeholders have been meeting for the past 10 months to ensure the continuation of the direct flight from the United Kingdom to Deer Lake," the group stated in a news release issued Thursday.

"To date, the resort has been subsidizing the cost of this flight, and the stakeholders needed to prepare itself for the eventuality of it being discontinued," it reads.

Humber Direct-Air has been meeting with officials from Humber Valley Resort, other stakeholder groups and representatives from various federal and provincial government departments to work together to maintain the vital link.

"The group's mandate is very specific and very clear, that due to the major economic impact the cancellation of the flight will have on the Humber Valley, that stakeholders work together with the resort and others to continue with the direct-air flight," continued the release.

The group is inviting anyone who feels they may be impacted by the discontinuation of the flight service to attend its next meeting, which will take place at the Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook Wednesday at 7 p.m.
