Federal New Democrat Leader Jack Layton is in St. John's on the campaign trail today.
He spoke to a crowd of local and national media on a side street in St. John's East with candidate Jack Harris.
Layton said if elected he will stop price gouging by banks, credit card companies, communications giants and oil companies.
Layton said all Canadians are being gouged every time they gas up their cars and take their own money out of banks using bank machines.
Layton said he wants put a cap on interest rates for credit cards at 5 per cent over the prime rate.
He also wants to end access fees for cellphone users and end "unfair text message cash-grabs" by communications companies such as Aliant, Rogers and Telus.
According to Layton these are the causes of the "middle-class squeeze," which sees working people have less money in their pockets.
Layton, Harris and St. John's South-Mount Pearl candidate Ryan Cleary will attend a town hall meeting at Memorial University at lunch time.
