When the economy is contracting, a 30 per cent, year-over-year growth in the first quarter might sound like a dream for most businesses.

For a division of St. John's headquartered Xwave, this year that dream was a reality.

Xwave's adv-anced technology solutions group showed exceptionally strong growth, especially during a recession, said Andrew Parlee, a solutions manager with the company.

"We were successful with a number of existing clients in the first quarter," he said. "We were able to identify areas of opportunity with them, new projects and new initiatives that helped us achieve these results."

He said part of the success has been the company's focus on "infrastructure consulting," helping clients streamline their information technology systems, providing hardware and software and providing environmentally friendly IT solutions.

Parlee said new technologies are now allowing firms like his to build systems that run on less power, use fewer servers and, as a result, both save money and are better for the environment.

"Rather than having 10 servers in a data centre, with today's technology it could mean there's two servers," he said.

Xwave was recently named one of Canada's top five green solution providers by itbusiness.ca.

Parlee said the company's ability to show people how to do more for less is also a key to success during recessionary times.

He said their consulting helps make sure purchases clients make with limited funds are the right choices for their business or organization.

"That's been successful for us and it continues to be a big part of our strategy," he said.
