The St. John's International Women's Film Festival is celebrating 20 years of highlighting the work of filmmakers in both Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond with a Motown-inspired, champagne-filled party at The Majestic.
Being held Oct. 3, just over two weeks before the official opening of the festival, the party will be a celebration, but also a fundraiser for the developing Michelle Jackson Emerging Film-maker Fund.
Jackson is known in the provincial film world for having worked on the productions of "Random Passage" and "The Divine Ryans," as well her own documentary "Mary Power, A Life in Stories," which had its debut at the festival.
The Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Fund was created in honour of Jackson, following her sudden death in 2008, at the age of 34.
The fund will begin to be dispersed, supporting local filmmakers, in 2010, said festival communications representative Maggie O'Keefe.
"The Supreme Champagne Birthday Bash" is slated to include a champagne fountain and St. John's International Women's Film Festival birthday cake. It will also feature a special tribute performance by Janet Cull and Kelly Ann Evans to the women of Motown.
"The theme is Motown, so break out your sequined dresses, your flashy suits, and your dance shoes. If you've got shaky steps, come early and Lynn Panting will help you put groove in your moves," states a notice from the festival on the event.
"It's not your normal night downtown and it's to help your local filmmakers," said O'Keefe. "It's going to be a really great night, a fun night."
Tickets for Saturday's birthday party and fundraiser are $30 ($20 for students and seniors). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and performances start at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through the St. John's International Women's Film Festival office (754-3141) and at the door.
