The Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce met with the corporate services committee of the council for the City of Mount Pearl Friday to present its pre-budget submission survey results and recommendations for the city's 2010 budget.
Highlights from survey results include recommendations for the development of a master transportation plan for Mount Pearl, continue with the City's Strategic Planning Process, additional human resources support for the economic development division and improved communications by the city with the business sector.
While 84.2 per cent of survey respondents were satisfied with the level of services offered by the City of Mount Pearl, 33.9 per cent feel the city needs to do more to increase business in the community.
Chamber president Russ Durant stated that while the survey results show business retention and expansion as the third priority for the city, when asked what respondents believe should be the city's core responsibilities, economic development came out as Number 1.
"This past October there was a dramatic increase in property assessments by the Municipal Assessment Agency. A partial reduction of the mil rate would ease some of the additional tax burden, however, neutralizing would not prove beneficial for future planning." Durant said. "It is important that our tax rate remain competitive. We promote the city's re-establishment of business tax incentives to encourage commercial development, particularly in the downtown core."
Building on relationships with city council and staff, increased human resource support from the city, information sharing, and communication with Mount Pearl City Council are key goals of the Chamber, Durant said.
"The city needs to improve communications, especially regarding taxation and business support."
