Those living along certain parts of the coast of Newfoundland should batten down the hatches this weekend, according to weather watches in effect by Environment Canada.
According to the weather warnings, high winds, with gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour, are expected on the south west coast of the island and in particular in the Channel-Port aux Basques-Burgeo area.
As well, storm surge is expected along the eastern Avalon Peninsula Sunday, where three- to four-metre waves are expected to break on shore. The high tide, combined with high winds moving off shore is expected to generate a storm surge of about 35 centimetres.
There is potential for damage as a result of pounding surf, Environment Canada warns.
