The mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay today commended the provincial government for implementing year-round ferry service between Labrador and the island, across the Strait of Belle Isle.
Transportation Minister Tom Hedderson made the announcement Thursday saying funding of $1.5-million has been provided for a pilot project to test the possibility of providing the year-round ferry service.
"It is one of the last barriers to the movement of people, goods and services between the two portions of this province," Mayor Leo Abbass said in a news release.
"With the completion of Phase III of the Trans-Labrador Highway, the need for reliable and continuous service across the strait is of paramount importance. We commend the province for understanding this need, providing additional funding and keeping this transportation route open year round."
The service by the MV Apollo will continue to operate between St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon until Jan. 31, or until ice and weather conditions dictate otherwise.
At that time, the service will continue to be provided for the duration of the winter season, with two round trips per week, between Corner Brook and Blanc Sablon.
The MV Apollo will be taken out of service on Feb. 1, to undergo its annual refit for approximately eight weeks. During the Apollo's refit, the MV Sir Robert Bond will provide the service. As with any ferry service in the province, service provided during this pilot project will be subject to suitable ice and weather conditions.
"While this is indeed a great initiative, people should keep in mind that this is a bold endeavour in a difficult winter environment," Hedderson said. "Over the course of the winter we may encounter conditions that, despite our best efforts, cause disruptions in service."

What a work-horse the Sir Robert Bond is. I remember when Marine Atlantic used her several times as a replacement vessel on Bay of Fundy service, Saint John to Digby, when the Princess of Acadia was in for refit.
