According to a Statistics Canada report, this province's workforce was hardest hit by the second wave of H1N1 when it hit in November.
The Toronto Star is reporting that provincially, "flu-related absenteeism was highest among workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, where 14.2% of workers among those polled lost hours."
The lowest absenteeism rate was in Quebec where 7.6 per cent of workers called in sick.
Statistics Canada reports that 1.5 million people called in sick in November as a result of the swine flu.
Each worker lost an average of 19.6 hours each, totaling 29.5 million lost work hours in November.
The survey polled workers aged 15 to 69.
But calling in sick meant that healthy workers had to make up for lost productivity, the report says.
About 600,000 people worked 8.6 million overtime or extra hours while their colleagues were off work.
Many of those were health care workers.
