Municipal leaders from across the province will gather in Labrador City this weekend for the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) board of directors meeting to discuss gas tax funding, the provincial pre-budget consultations and infrastructure funding.
According to a news release, the MNL board of directors will review the auditor general's report on the Gas Tax Funding management and concerns that the federal government will cut back infrastructure funding in the next budget.
MNL President Harry Hallett said the challenges presented by ever increasing demands on services and infrastructure, while revenue streams remain stagnant means that most municipalities cannot meet the service needs of their residents.
"These programs have created much-needed employment, especially in our smaller municipalities," Hallett said. "Raising sufficient money to run their towns and improve the health and safety in our communities continues to be the primary concern of municipal leaders. We are asking for a commitment from government to sustain federal infrastructure investments, particularly the permanent Gas Tax Fund."
In a recent poll conducted for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), found that 69 per cent of Canadians rank infrastructure investments second only to health care in importance. In Atlantic Canada, that figure is 73 per cent.
