Emergency crews on Bell Island are working to quell a dump fire that Wabana Mayor Gary Gosine claims was deliberately set early today.
The fire has been contained to the dumpsite and is presently smoldering.
Gosine said workers are using heavy equipment to try to smother it with soil.
"It's a lot better now, an hour later. We have dozers, loaders, backhoes, everything now that we've got on site trying to extinguish the fire that was deliberately set," Gosine said.
He said the fire seems to have started around some old lumber.

Well, well, well, what do we have here? Bell Island in the news again?
The mayor may want to rethink that idea of a highly explosive, hydrocarbon storage facility when you have people running around the island getting their kicks with a box of seadogs! Re-location anyone?? -
