Ottawa -
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called in the RCMP to investigate embattled Conservative MP Helena Guergis.
He also accepted her resignation from cabinet and temporarily booted her out of the Tory caucus.
The moves follow a mushrooming scandal over an airport tantrum, questionable ethics and husband Rahim Jaffer's legal woes.
Harper refused to say what the Mounties have been asked to look into.
Guergis has been serving as minister of state for the status of women.
She and Jaffer have been the subject of scrutiny since he was charged with drunk driving and cocaine possession last year.
In February, critics demanded Guergis resign after she threw a tantrum at Charlottetown airport.
Guergis sent out an email Friday saying the last nine months have been "a very difficult time." She acknowledged mistakes and apologized again for her "emotional" outburst in Charlottetown.
Guergis will continue to serve as MP for Simcoe-Grey just north of Toronto.
