Negotiations broke up within a day

Contract negotiations resum-ed briefly between Ocean Choice International and the union representing about 1,500 workers at the company's six processing plants in this province.

However, by the end of the day, the discussions broke off with no solution.

The union said in a news release the company came to the negotiations unwilling to compromise and demanding workers make sacrifices on wages, overtime holidays and vacation pay.

"I'm astounded that this company came to the bargaining table today with nothing but concessions on their agenda," said Ben Baker of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers.

The union plans to hold a strike vote within days.

Negotiations broke off on March 26, with the union accusing the company of trying to erode the collective agreement.

The union represents workers at OCI plants in Marystown, Port Union, Bonavista, Triton, Port au Choix and South Dildo.

The average plant worker earns roughly $12.50 per hour.
