Terra Nova Shoes in Harbour Grace says a lack of demand for its work boots - including fewer orders from the Department of National Defence - is the reason 59 workers were laid off Thursday.
The shoe manufacturer was the only company with staying power of those that were part of then premier Joey Smallwood's 1960s industrialization scheme.
Kodiak Group Holdings, the parent company of Terra Nova Shoes, said it is committed to the 100 or so people still working at the company and plans to target new clients by developing new products.

Doesn't the provincial government keep giving these guys money? Big money? It appears that they are basically just paying the salaries until the money runs out. I wonder if I could get some money to bring back Joey's chocolate factory...if I get the same provincial support there would be zero risk.....mmmm chocolate.

Hold on now, before the Tory koolaid slurpers jump on me...while Little Man Dan might not be responsible for this directly, I'm with Randy on this one. Just consider this...if Little Man Dan wasn't so obnoxious, abbrasive, arrogant and abusive towards our federal counterparts, maybe he could contact Defense Minister MacKay and ask for intervention, particularly with the DND contract. Afterall, we have hundreds of reservists stomping around Pleasantville just waiting for Stevie to get the call from Uncle Sam to deploy more troops as backup for US global invaisions. But, without any rapport or relationship whatsoever upalong, Dan's on his own for this disaster too.

Just goes to show ya that Peter Mac has big plans for Danny and his misfits. Why buy from Danny when he can buy from China for less? Makes perfect economic sense to me. I do not want to waste my tax dollars on product that do not last, and cost three times the amount as those they can import.
Gotta luv that strong Loonie Now ;-) -

If more people would support local industry instead of pointing the finger at the government everytime they get there panties in a knot then things like this wouldn't be going on.
