Telegram photographer Joe Gibbons wasn't disappointed Saturday night when one of his photos from this year came in second place at the Atlantic Journalism Awards in Halifax.
Gibbons' photo was taken when a two construction workers who were working on Cumberland Crescent in St. John's on June 27 were injured in a ground cave in. One of the workers had to be dug out by hand.
Gibbons' photo was beat out by Steve Wadden of the Cape Breton Post, in Sydney, NS called "Fire Rescue on Roof."
Also coming in second place was Noel Chenier of the Telegraph-Journal, in Saint John, NB for a photograph called "Dwarfed by Fire."
The Telegram took first place in the category of continuing coverage for the work done by staff around the Cougar Helicopter Crash of March 2009, beating out the Coast in Halifax for its coverage of the broken sewage plant there, and Marty Klinkenberg of the Telegraph-Journal, in Saint John, NB for his coverage called "Accident Aftermath."
