Workers at six fish plants in the province have voted 93 per cent to go on strike if contract negotiations fail between the union and Ocean Choice International (OCI).
Fish Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) negotiator Ben Baker said he'll be contacting the Labour Relations Board conciliator early next week, and try to get back to negotiations with the company soon.
"It's a big strike mandate and people are not going to put up with taking concessions that they've got on the table," Baker said. "So, in my opinion they'd better start doing something different."
The employees work at six OCI plants throughout the province crab plants in Triton and Bonavista, shrimp plants in Port au Choix and Port Union, and groundfish plants in Marystown and Dildo.
The company has offered an overall increase to a wage of $13.25 per hour in the first year and $13.45 in the second. But the union says that the company is trying to force them to make concessions on overtime, vacations and statutory holidays.

This is amazing. These workers would rather see things shut down then actually go to work. As far as I know this also includes the boats but considering the people on those boats, I am not surprised. Hope ye all have fun out west because I don't know why you think a company should be in business just to keep you employed, and loose money doing so
