The federal government and Marine Atlantic advised today they will make a special announcement Friday in St. John's regarding the ferry service.
Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport); Rob Crosbie, chairman of Marine Atlantic's board of directors; and Wayne Follett, president and CEO for Marine Atlantic, will make the announcement 11 a.m. at the Delta St. John's Hotel and Conference Centre.
A news release did not provide information on what the announcement would contain, but issues that have been getting media attention and criticism lately, especially from trucking companies, have been the new reservation system, on-time sailings, and lack of capacity.

I believe the ferry service should be treated as part of the Trans Canada. It is one of the only two ways in and out of Newfoundland. If you go to Ontario, you do not need to pay for a ferry to get to an island. Why do you have to pay so much to get on and off Newfoundland? I am from Newfoundland and find it very expensive to go home for a visit. It is cheaper to go on vacation elsewhere.

they do have a vessel just for commercial, right now it is the smallwood but the ericson will pick up the sailing again soon.maybe the announcement will be 2 newer vessels starting 2011.

Why don't we have a ferry dedicated to transport trunks(ie freight).
It would improve things dramatically. Faster loading/unloading for cars, more space for trunks, etc...
They could do a pilot project in the summer when there is increased traffic. -

I believe they do have a ship dedicated just for freight, its called the Atlantic Freighter.
Why don't they have smaller passenger/auto ferries running to Port aux Basque. Ones that can dock in higher wind speeds.
Then they could run larger ships for trucks and containers into a larger port. -
