Premier Danny Williams and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty are calling for Vale Inco and the United Steel Workers' Union to "resolve their differences immediately" and end the ongoing strikes in both provinces.
The provincial leaders had a conference call this week to discuss the ongoing labour disputes.
The Voisey's Bay strike in Labrador began in August 2009, while the strike in Sudbury, Ontario began a month earlier.
There are 200 or so workers from Voisey's Bay and more than 3,000 employees affected in both Sudbury and Port Colborne Ontario by the strikes.
"I am extremely concerned with the impact these strikes are having on the women and men employed by Vale Inco and their families during these frustrating labour disputes," stated Williams in a news release. "Both strikes have gone on far too long, and the impacts are truly devastating and can be felt throughout the communities involved. It is time for both parties to reach a fair deal for those involved so that the hard-working employees can finally return to work and resume their lives."
The release also states that the province has been monitoring the situation while the Labour Relations Agency in this province "has continually provided conciliatory services to the parties involved."

Let the name calling begin Danno. So you have used kangaroo court so what next, a bunch of monkeys, or donkeys. I hope people are realizing the type of company we are inviting in to rape our resources and poison our air/land/water and take their profits to South America. Typical Newfoundland fashion though, we don't care by tear it up and burn it down, I needs a job. We need to think about consequences of this type of industry before we jump in with both feet.

The relative procreation of unions in this province already has an impact on investment. If an Ant-Scab law was introduced, we'd break the proverbial camels back. It's ludicrous to think that a company should be unable to realize profits from an investment if the union doesn't get exactly what they want.

IC the announcement of the name change only came yesterday to the people working for VALE and what does it matter!!!!
Chad if you owned a store and the people went on strike would you let that store go to the grown or would you get help to make money to cover cost! Think about it.
Another thing if sudbury would have settle last year then Voisey's would be back as well. The Bonus is just that a Bonus the employer has the right to pay it. They don't want to take it away they just want to modify it to be based on personal performance! Imagine people having to work for their paycheck.
Vale is a good company to work for ask someone who's been there for 10yrs!!! -

It's no good asking the two sides to get together, when one side (the employer) can hire replacement workers , i.e. scabs, to continue operations. It's time for the Williams' government to enact the legislation that was mentioned some time ago as part of the government's agenda.

My guess is that Williams is more concerned about the revenues that the province is not receiving than the families involved. Complaining about a multinational company is always good for the public opinion polls even though it will have absolutely no influence on resolving the strike. By the way, someone in the Premier's office should advise him that the company dropped 'Inco' from their name - they are now officially just called Vale. For a government that claims to be monitoring the situation closely, you'd think that they would know that.

So, then, to help prevent such lengthy strikes in the future why not Write, and Pass some
Anti-Scab Legislation?
If you can write an expropriation bill in a few days it should have been possible to write such other legislation in the past 8 or 9 months. -

Together they may be able to do something about the strike.If the free flow of nickle from our province could be halted ,Vale Inco would suffer a great loss.
The whole thing stinks of big buisness greed.It makes me sick!!!!!!
If the workers ever do return to work they should give a big thanks to the scabs who filled their shoes. -

If the negotiating crew and other union lackeys were feeling the pinch like the people they supposedly represent, this strike would have been resolved months ago. However, the union head honchos do quite well during strikes so have little incentive to resolve them unless they can have their own way.
