The five-man crew of a Newfoundland fishing vessel was successful in putting out a stubborn fire onboard the boat today about 80 miles off St. John's.
The vessel - the Fins n' Skins - is now heading to St. John's under the escort of two Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary vessels and is expected to arrive about midnight.
There were no injuries reported and the extent of damage caused by the fire is unknown at this point.
The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Sir Wilfred Grenfell and the Atlantic Osprey remain enroute to the fishing vessel, while other emergency responders - a comorant helicopter, fixed wing aircraft and other vessels - have stood down.
The fire was first reported about 11:38 a.m. today when the Fins n' Skins was about 80 miles east of St. John's.
Kevin Barnes, regional supervisor with Maritime Search and Rescue in St. John's, said it appears the fire started in the galley.
At 12:10 p.m., the crew reported the fire was out but still smoldering, and shortly thereafter reported the fire had flared up again.
At 1:30 p.m. the crew reported the fire to be out again.
The Fins n' Skins is registered in St. John's to Louise Mary Inc., owned by P. Jones & Sons of Hants Harbour, T.B.
