The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating a single-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway, in the area of Pitts Memorial Drive in Mount Pearl, about 6 p.m. Sunday that left the driver in critical condition.

The vehicle was travelling westbound when it left the roadway, veered into the centre median and struck a concrete support pillar of the Pitts Memorial Drive overpass.

The lone occupant of the vehicle, a male in his early 20s, was transported to hospital and is reportedly in critical condition.

RNC Forensic Identification and Accident Investigation Units closed the westbound lane of the TCH, to ensure a thorough examination of the roadway. The investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing. The roadway re-opened to motorists at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday.
