The work week got off to a deadly start in eastern Newfoundland Monday after a middle-aged man died in a single-vehicle accident near Whitbourne.

The accident happened shortly before 9 a.m. about eight kilometres east of Whitbourne on the divided highway, near Sparke's Farm. The truck was heading west.

The single-axle freight delivery truck went out of control and flipped on its side, with the cab resting on the shoulder and the box in the ditch.

Much of the truck's contents - mostly courier packages - crashed through the roof of the cargo box and spilled into the ditch and along the side of the road.

Police say the man was thrown from the cab and died at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Road conditions were poor at the time as heavy rain filled the ruts on the pavement with water.

The identity and hometown of the man were not released Monday. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on the victim, and a forensic inspection of the vehicle will be carried out to determine if mechanical failures were responsible.

The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call the Whitbourne detachment at 759-2600.

The RCMP, provincial highway enforcement officers and members of the Whitbourne Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

Meanwhile, RNC officials say a man in his early 20s remains in critical but stable condition after his car crashed into a concrete support pillar along the Trans-Canada Highway on Sunday evening.

The driver was travelling west on the TCH when his car veered into the centre median and struck the pillar, which supports the overpass on Pitt's Memorial Drive.

The driver was the lone occupant in the vehicle.

An RNC spokesperson said the investigation in ongoing, and anyone who witnessed the accident can call the RNC at 729-8000, or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

this man was a very dependable hard working man who provided for his family in any way possible. He drove this highway for around 20 years in good and bad conditions. I wish someone who attended this scene as an emergency attend would conttact me. The reason I want to hear from someone is because im his son and would like more info and answers.. We miss our dad so much...
