Premier Danny Williams is travelling to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to participate in the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) taking place Thursday to Saturday.
Williams was invited to attend the forum by the Russian Federation.
According to a news release, SPIEF is a leading international business and economic event, held under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation. It attracts over 2,500 international and Russian participants representing government and business leaders from around the world, joined by leading voices from academia, media and civil society.
The theme of this year's conference is Laying the Foundation for the Future Global Economy: Managing the Recovery.
"I look forward to participating in this premiere international event, which brings together business, political and academic leaders," Williams said.
"The list of participants is impressive and I am anxious not only to share the success story of our province, but to hear of best practices from around the world. We have seen more than ever during the recession over the past 18 months just how integrated we are as a global community. I look forward to hearing a global perspective and applying it to the continued growth of Newfoundland and Labrador."

He should ask them why they continued overfishing off our shores when the moratorium was on.

As with most such forums and trade missions, this little foray to Russia will be little more than a free (actually paid) exotic vacation for the premier's entourage of staffers. Nothing ever comes of any of these 'business trips'.

We have absolutely nothing to learn from Russia.

    It's economy remains in chaos.

Call this what it is - a junket at taxpayer expense.

What success will you be sharing with the Russians Mr. Williams? The only thing positive about this place is the oil under our water. You had nothing to do with those discoveries. That was in place long before you sat on your throne. You have destroyed rural Nl. Look at the fishery, gone. The Paper Making Industry driven out of the province, because of your arrogance. You have shown nothing but scorn to those of us outside of overpass. Tell that to the Russians.
