Several Newfoundland companies and Atlantic region firms with offices in Newfoundland, have been named by Progress Magazine as being among the best places to work in Atlantic Canada.

Several Newfoundland companies and Atlantic region firms with offices in Newfoundland, have been named by Progress Magazine as being among the best places to work in Atlantic Canada.

SwiftRadius Inc., an Atlantic Canadian information technology company, with an office in St. John's, is ranked third out of 30 companies on the list.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union is ranked fourth, and Talon Energy Services Inc., is in fifth place.

Cox and Palmer, an Atlantic law firm with offices in St. John's, is ranked ninth. Technip Canada Ltd. is in 10th place and Corporate Research Associates Inc., which also has an office in St. John's, is in 13th place.

Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) Atlantic Ltd., which has offices in all four provinces is ranked 14th, C-Core, a research and development company headquartered in St. John's, is ranked 22nd and McInnes Cooper, an Atlantic law firm with offices in St. John's, is 23rd.

This is the third consecutive year that SwiftRadius has been recognized by Progress Magazine as one of the top three best places to work in Atlantic Canada.

"We have worked hard to maintain the SwiftRadius culture and core values during a period, 2008-10, when the company more than doubled in size and became a regional firm," said CEO Scott MacIntosh. The organization has a team of about 50 consultants. Its St. John's office is located on Elizabeth Avenue.

Talon Energy was also ranked No. 3 in Progress Magazine's Fastest Growing Company list this year.

A company that's only eight years old, Talon has achieved a growth rate of almost 800 per cent, with employment growth of 250 per cent and annual revenues reaching more than $30 million.

Progress Magazine said St. John's-based Technip, which was ranked 10th, enlists staff to help with recruitment and offers bonuses for landing new hires.

The No. 1 ranking went to Ambir, an information technology consulting firm with offices in Halifax, N.S., Saint John, N.B., and Fredericton, N.B. It's Ambir's second time at No. 1, repeating its 2007 achievement.

Ambir CEP Ian Cavanagh credits the top ranking to a unique and highly personalized focus on values, personal authenticity, and helping people realize career goals and personal dreams in tandem.

"We want the experience of being part of the Ambir team to be more meaningful than just bottom-line driven," he said.

Doctors Nova Scotia came in second on the list.

To determine the region's best places to work, Progress Magazine partners with Pennsylvania-based Best Companies Group (BCG), a research firm that manages best company programs in North America and one in Western Australia.

BCG conducts an extensive two-part survey, including an organizational overview of each company's policies and procedures and an in-depth employee questionnaire.

"Making the list has become more competitive, and employee satisfaction levels required to make the list are climbing each year," said BCG president Peter Burke. "Meeting these standards is no easy accomplishment.

The ranked companies and related stories will appear in the July/August issue of Progress Magazine and will be available online at www.progressmedia.ca.
