The Hibernia oil platform's power failed Wednesday at around 1:40 a.m. as routine maintenance was being performed on one of the main power generators.
Oil production shut down as it was supposed to, but the public address system failed as well.
"That's why we employed then our backup plan, which is manual notification," said Margot Bruce-O'Connell, spokeswoman for the Hibernia Management and Development Co.
Staff had to go door-to-door to the sleeping stations to tell workers to go to their muster stations, where they gather in emergency situations.
Full power was restored Thursday evening and production resumed that night.
Provincial New Democratic Party leader Lorraine Michael said she has been contacted with concerns about the lack of information workers have received about the incident and its cause.
"They don't know what happened and they don't feel secure," she said.
"I believe they have the right to know," she said.
Sean Kelly, a spokesman for the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, the body that regulates the province's offshore oil industry, says it will follow up with the company to get further information about the cause of the outage.
The organization will also be in contact with the rig's certifying authority, a third-party agency.
"We're treating this as a serious incident," he said.
Bruce-O'Connell said there will be a thorough investigation into the incident. No one was injured.

Danny and his clones have a back up plan in place NO NEED TO WORRY. Now if only they had a clue what that back up plan is that would be nice. Perhaps in the event of a large oil spill Danny and his clones can be held responsible for doing nothing to prevent it. All Danny cares about is the money flowing in not the oil flowing out. Oh well many of you have no problem with his lies and cover ups so really as long as the majority love Danny nothing else really matters.

Lorraine Michaels always seems to know it all. I am some fed up listening to her complaining about everything. I would love to see the job she would do as Premier of our Province.
