The province is spending $14 million to beef up its fisheries research capabilities.
The money includes $5.25 million to charter a research vessel and funding to establish a Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research.
Williams said the announcements will serve to change the face of the fishery in a positive direction.
"No longer will we exclusively rely upon the research of others to guide the fishery into the future," he said.
The premier said the province will use the information collected to better understand what's happening with fisheries ecosystems and to collaborate with federal scientists and researchers around the world.

Shouldn't the Feds or the EU be paying for reseach as they are managing the fishery?
