The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board's (C-NLOPB) two Calls for Bids in the Flemish Pass-Central Ridge region announced this week demonstrates the oil and gas industry's continued interest in Newfoundland and Labrador's prospective offshore basins, the provincial government said today.
"Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore region is open for exploration to those companies with resources and competencies to comply with our progressive regulatory regime which holds companies to the highest standards in the areas of safety, environmental protection and resource management," Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale said in a news release.
"Our open and transparent land-management system ensures that qualified interested parties can gain access to highly prospective acreages of land in our province's offshore."
Call for Bids NL10-02 consists of two parcels of land comprising 327,372 hectares. The minimum bid for each parcel is one million dollars. Call for Bids NL10-03 consists of one parcel of land comprising 3,773 hectares and offers the successful bidder a Significant Discovery License. All parcels have been previously assessed to identify any mitigative measures that may be required in relation to future exploration activity.
Last year, Statoil discovered a hydrocarbon accumulation during the drilling of its deepwater exploration well, the Mizzen O-16, in the Flemish Pass Basin. This has created additional interest in the basin.
Details of the 2010 Calls for Bids can be found on the C-NLOPB's website at www.cnlopb.nl.ca. The deadline to submit bids is Nov. 30 at 4:00 p.m.
