Bergs getting harder to find

Vodka company sailing further afield to harvest ice

The scarcity of icebergs off the northeast coast of Newfoundland this year has posed a challenge for a local liquor company.

It’s had to move north to harvest the ice used in Iceberg Vodka.

“ This has been a lean year for icebergs,” said Frank Heaps, CEO of Iceberg Vodka.

“If they cannot be found near St. John’s where the product is made we are forced to go farther afield to find them.”

The company has moved its ice-extraction operations to Labrador.

In the past, however, when icebergs have been harder to find, it has sourced ice from as far away as Greenland.

“ It varies from year to year depending on weather, wind and sea conditions,” said Heaps.

A spokesperson for the company said the product’s price won’t be affected.

Iceberg Vodka, based out of St. John’s, is bottled by the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation.

Red, to answer your question. Because of global warming heating up the artic water the icebergs are melting BEFORE they get here. Now does that add up?

Less ice = Less ice bergs ... most of the earth ice caps are gone already.
