NAPE President Carol Furlong announced today the union has agreed to a suggestion by the Coalition of Persons With Disabilities (COD) to send all outstanding issues in the strike of the Burin/Marystown Community Training and Employment Board to arbitration.

Negotiations broke off last week between the workers — on strike since last fall — and the provincial government. The striking group are employees who provide support-based services to enable people with disabilities to work in the community.

"Our primary aim as a union has been to negotiate a mutually acceptable collective agreement with the provincial government,” Furlong said.

“However, this is becoming less and less likely. In recognition of the significant negative impact on the employees and the clients they serve, NAPE has accepted the suggestion, by the Coalition of Persons With Disabilities, to arbitrate all outstanding issues and have the employees return to work."

The workers have been on strike since Nov. 24.
