Colemans received a prestigious award Tuesday for best large surface retail supermarket in Canada.

The award was presented at the 50th annual Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers’ (CFIG) national awards event in Toronto.

According to a news release, Colemans beat out numerous large-scale stores across the country, being recognized for its newest location in Corner Brook and the company’s continued success at a national level. It’s the first time in the 50-year history of the awards that an Atlantic Canadian grocer received the honour.

“We are quite proud to receive this award from CFIG," said Frank Coleman, President, Coleman Group of Companies.

“Our business environment is a competitive one and we work hard to execute on a level that is appreciated by our customers. It is nice for our superlative staff to be recognized amongst our peers at a national level for that commitment to giving our customers the best possible grocery shopping experience.”

Each year the CFIG Awards Program recognizes the success of outstanding independent retailers and offers insights into innovations that are changing and enhancing the way retailers compete.

“For the past 50 years, CFIG has been showcasing Canada’s top independent grocers whose innovation, leadership and commitment to excellence bring them long-term success in the Canadian grocery landscape,” says John F.T. Scott, President of CFIG. “Colemans is a great example of this as they are a vibrant part of the Newfoundland economy, where they not only thrive but lead the way in retail innovation.”

Congratulations. Excellent and well managed company. The management and staff at Coleman's should be proud of this accomplishment. I had a couple of great grocery shopping experiences at The Gardens store. I only wish there were more Coleman stores in St. John's so I could shop there as well. It is too far for people in St. John's and vicinity to drive to Mt. Pearl (another excellent store). A location around The Avalon Mall or Elizabeth Avenue (replace Merrymeeting) would be great. Keep providing the great service and competetive prices. Nice to see a NL company expanding and competing sucessfully against the multi national big boys.

Congratulations!!! I love shopping @ Colemans, Mount Pearl, Merry meeting Rd. It's so friendly, courteous and great produce. I've noticed alot of seniors like to shop there because you don't have to walk 5kms. around the store to pick up your order. Great specials too!
