There will be plenty of food to munch on immediately or bring home to cook later at this year’s Torbay Farmers’ Market starting Sunday. — Submitted photos

Whether it’s root vegetables or arts and crafts residents of Torbay and the surrounding area crave, they’ll have a one-stop destination to look forward to for three straight Sundays starting Sept. 25.

The Torbay Farmers’ Market is gearing up for its third year. The combined outdoor-indoor event is taking place at the Torbay Kinsmen Community Centre.

In past years, the market only opened for a single Sunday. Two market days were scheduled for last fall, but hurricane Igor kiboshed one of those days.

“This year, we’re expanding it to three weekends in a row with hopes to expand it even further next year,” said Jeff Lawlor, an economic development officer with the Town of Torbay.

Lawlor spoke highly of the St. John’s Farmers’ Market, whose organizers he has consulted with in setting up the Torbay market. “There’s not really a lot of other towns in the region who are setting up farmers’ markets and promoting fresh and local produce, arts and crafts, and all that wonderful stuff.”

Similar to the St. John’s market, the event in Torbay will feature farmers selling produce, multicultural foods to snack on, baked goods, clothing, jewelry, books, arts and crafts, and other goods. Lawlor expects to have 25-30 vendors at the market.

Additionally, a bouncy castle and free hot chocolate will be available for children, and there will be musical performers.

“It’s a really family-focused event, and we have a lot more going on than just the farmers’ market. We want to have a place where families can come out for a Sunday afternoon and buy stuff but also have a little bit of fun, eat some good food and enjoy themselves.”

Running Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9, the market will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
