It looks like there will be some competition in the grocery business in Marystown.

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. is opening a No Frills store in the space vacated by Sobeys in the Marystown Mall in November 2010.

Sobeys left that space to open a big box store.

Marystown council approved a permit last week for Dartmouth, N.S.-based Ryson Interior Construction to renovate the space for Loblaw, which operated a Dominion store in the Peninsula Mall in Marystown until it closed in early 2010.

Loblaw has 175 stores under its discount chain banner in eight Canadian provinces, including in Paradise and Clarenville in this province.

The public relations department for Loblaw declined an interview last week and said via email the company is “not in a position to discuss any potential plans for this location at this time.”

Following the council meeting, Mayor Sam Synard said he planned to call the company to welcome them back to the community.

“Competition is really good. People are looking for competition in the grocery business.

No Frills is, of course, owned by Loblaw, so the store comes with a lot of history behind it as well.

“I think it will create an extra 30, 40, 50 jobs in the community, which is wonderful.”

At the Marystown Mall last week, Alp Hardiman of Garnish was all for another grocery store in the area.

“I think it’s a good idea for competition, because we need it,” he said.

Susanna Baker of Marystown agreed it will be good to have another shopping option.

“I think the prices are outrageous. I’m glad. Can’t wait for it to open.”

Bud Pollett, owner of Jasmine Jewellery in the mall, was hoping the company planned to open

an exit inside the building, as had been the case with that space in the past.

He said the mall hasn’t had a lot of business lately, and the new grocery store will help.

“It ought to increase traffic in the mall, that’s for sure,” he said. “It’ll do that much.”

I think it's a good idea to have another Grocery store here in Marystown as the prices here now is out of this world. there is just no way people can keep up with it. I hope this new store won't move in the area and do the same with their prices as if they do we all might as well give up

We definately need some competition here on the Peninsula that's for sure. This will be great for people in Marystown and the surrounding communities.
