Actually, there is research from the UK: http://www.bis.gov.uk/files/file38330.pdf and the US http://www.thehackettgroup.com/about/alerts/alerts_2006/alert_08172006.jsp that programs like these to identify diverse suppliers actually drive profits and help the bottom line. Sheppard is correct that there can be more research about its impacts but companies like ExxonMobil are already realizing the benefits of supplier diversity programs. Thanks for the great article.

building a local supply community may sound great, but the businesses involved we be best advised to consider NOT buying locally, but rather buying from bigger companies that serve as vendors on a multinational scale. Companies need to focus on the bottom line, not supporting a local economy
