The Sheraton Hotel was overrun with Memorial University business students as well as local businesspeople Friday morning, for the university's annual Business Day.

Memorial student Samantha Phelan, who organized the day with fellow student Charlotte Gifford, said the speakers were thought-provoking.

"The overall theme was innovation and sustainability," she said. "A lot of speakers either spoke about how they became who they are today and what their focus is looking forward, and how they need to be able to remain innovative and remain sustainable in order to really be able to compete with provincial companies as well as global companies."

Almost 250 people turned out for the conference, said Phelan, who credited the organizing committee for the turnout and quality of the speakers. The day featured remarks by Glenn Stanford, chief operating officer and governor of the St. John's IceCaps; Steve Power, chairman of the St. John's Board of Trade; Cathy Bennett, CEO of the Bennett Group of Companies; Earl Ludlow, president and CEO of Newfoundland Power; and was emceed by Andy Newman, vice-president of operations for Coast 101.1 FM.

It's not just the knowledge that benefitted the students, said Phelan, but the chance to meet successful representatives of the business community.

"That's one of the big things about Business Day, is we want students to network with those in the community, and there's not necessarily a lot of events focused at students and focused at new graduates who are coming up and graduating now in May, to really get out and network with those people in the community who can make that happen with them," she said.

Phelan credited the organizing students for the successful day.

"We had a great organizing committee behind us of 10 individuals, who were out of this world with getting things done, being on a deadline," said Phelan. "As much as today has been amazing and fulfilling to see how it's gone over so smoothly, it was really beneficial to work with them and know all of the hard work they put into it has paid off."
