Four N.L. establishments on website survey’s Top 50 in Canada

The venerable Duke of Duckworth in St. John’s has been named No. 10 out of 50 Canadian eateries in a survey by website Vacay.ca.

The No. 1 restaurant was Vij’s in Vancouver, which features contemporary Indian cuisine.

The Duke — a pub renowned for its fish and chips and its prominence on CBC-TV’s “Republic of Doyle” — was among the surprises on the Vacay.ca list. It ranked 10th overall, but did earn one first-place vote.

“Although many other local restaurants tout themselves to be the best fish ’n’ chips joint around, most folks from St. John’s will tell you that the Duke is the place to hit up,” says the story about the Duke on Vacay.ca.

Three other restaurants from the province also made the Top 50 list: Basho in St. John’s, Lighthouse Picnics in Ferryland and Java Jack’s in Rocky Harbour.

Ottawa’s Atelier, headed by chef Marc Lepine — the winner of this year’s Canadian Culinary Championships — received the nod for People’s Choice.

“Atelier received the most votes from Vacay.ca readers, Twitter followers and Facebook friends,” Vacay.ca managing editor Adrian Brijbassi said in a release.

Vij’s has come far from its beginnings in 1994. It was put up for sale during its early days after the first landlord complained about the smell of the cooking, and it nearly shut down after only two months because of poor patronage.

Now, customers line up for 90 minutes at the South Granville neighbourhood establishment to get a seat.

And the owner’s latest cookbook, “Vij’s at Home: Relax Honey,” written with his wife, Meeru Dhalwala, tied for a silver award among English language cookbooks in last year’s Canadian Culinary Book Awards.

Also on the inaugural Vacay.ca Top 50 Restaurants in Canada List was Toronto’s fourth-ranked The Black Hoof, known for its charcuterie plates that can include such fare as lamb’s brains ravioli and horse’s heart.

Toronto led all cities with 13 restaurants on the list, while Vij’s led Vancouver’s 11 entries.

“We created the Top 50 Restaurants in Canada List because we felt Canadian cuisine deserves to be celebrated,” said Brijbassi.

“Plus, travellers need an authoritative source to make decisions on their dining choices when visiting different regions of the country.”

He noted that the list covers everything from fine dining to neighbourhood lower-budget options.

Judges included food writers, industry insiders and culinary aficionados from across the country. Votes from the public were also included. The list was announced Thursday with a countdown on Twitter.

Here are the Top 10 winners out of 50, plus the other winning eateries from Newfoundland.

Mine was greasy and will never go back for fish n' chips there. Top 10 is a total joke. All because of tax payer $'s thrown at a TV show this joint in the basement get's a massive free ride in local popularity. Typical Nl - all about so called reputation and not on substance. Would not make the top 1000 in UK or Ireland!

The names on the list are undoubtedly not outrageously controversial or "wrong". But lists like this are not exaclty unbiased...they are bought and paid for, directly or indirectly. "Lists" of all kinds are now a dime a dozen, and new/different names are regularly required, deserving or not. Are people so stupid they need to be told this? Clue in.

I agree, the Duke's fish and chips are really good, but because of the one dish they are top 10? Sorry, I have eaten at much better places in a similar price range all over Canada. Their breakfast is awful..

The fish and chips at the Duke are very good and it has a good ambiance. But I'm not sure it belongs in the ten eateries in Canada. Nevertheless, they have my congratulations. One aspect of the Duke I am less impressed with is that it isn't the cleanest eatery I've been in. The chairs are badly soiled. In fact they are unsuitable for an establishment of that type. Get rid of the cloth covered chairs and get comfortable but more easily cleaned wooden chairs. Give it a fresh coat of paint and generally brighten it up.

I have never been to the Duke but will visit the next time I am in St. John's. I could not agree more with Fish Head that claims by Ches, Scampers and Leos about how good their fish and chips is are laughable. Overcooked!!! Not a lot of attention to quality are big issues. I live in Saskatoon and Joey's Seafood-a Ontario western Canadian chain does a better job than some of the greasy spoons previously mentioned. I also noticed too more renovation of restaurants out here. I remember Carl Wells talking about the issue in a column in how lack of maintenance, paint ...etc is something that does not get attention. Very different out here.

I am a world connoisseur of cod and I can confirm that The Duke has perfected the deep fried cod and its not complex ...fresh fish, good oil, light batter, not overcooked or sitiing on warming plates..add the fries, dressing and gravy if you wish but their cod is the best (By The Beach in St. Phillips pretty good ...forget Ches, Leo, and others dont waste your money).

I've had pub food all over the world and plenty of the best in rural England. The Duke can not be beat. Fish is always very fresh and sweet. They keep the fat clean, chips are always perfect and gravy is as lush and flavourful as gravy gets. If you want a reliable taste of local food at reasonable prices the Duke is the place to go. As a chef who is very fussy about food I've paid someone else to cook, I highly recommend the Duke kitchen.

What a joke! Good fee 'n' chee, sure, but 10th Best Restaurant in Canada? That's actually kind of embarassing.

Frank, can you tell me 10 better restaurants in Canada to visit while traveling? I have eaten at many places across Canada as I travel a fair amount for work. The Duke is the best fi n' chi I have visited. Considering it is located in St. John's where fi n' chi is king, I think it deserves a shout out. The purpose of the list is not to examine the most expensive places, its the best places to visit while traveling. Your crab in the bucket mentality is what is embarassing.

Frank....good point. The fish is good yes...but certainly not the same preparation costs and care as some of these other places on the list. Lighten up Rock.....

Hey Rock, where did I say it's a joke that a NEWFOUNDLAND restaurant is on the list? Oh look, that's right, I didn't. I said The Duke, specifically. And where did I say anything about how expensive it is having anything to do with it? Oh look, again, I didn't. I know all about lobsters in the pot. Do you?
